In My Neighborhood: Seaburn Books

July 28, 2010

Last weekend, my amazing Barbara friend who lives in DC and her equally amazing boyfriend Daniel came to visit me. On our way to brunch one morning, Barbara looks up and asks me “Is that a used bookstore?” I respond, “Sure?”

The bookstore in question is LITERALLY two blocks from my apartment. I’ve probably passed once a day. And I’ve never, ever paid attention to it. Lucky for me, Barbara did.

The place is called Seaburn Books and is one of those stores that is surprisingly large and floor-to-ceiling books, all placed haphazardly. There are so many books that you go cross-eyed trying to look at all of them. And don’t even try reading the labels–you’ll lose your vision.

It seems as if at one point there was a system where the books were placed by topic–fiction, sci fi, poetry, travel, children, etc. And while those labels are still in place, the books are not. It’s the kind of place you have to spend hours in to get a feel for what may or may not be there. Which is awesome.

Another awesome thing: they have the entire collection of Baby Sitters Club books. All of them. For $2 each.

This fact alone has made this place my new favorite store to visit in all of NYC. And you better believe that I’ve started re-collecting the BSC books….

Crush of the Day: Sendhil Ramamurthy

July 21, 2010

Even though people thought I was crazy, one of my favorite characters on (the now laughable) Heroes was Mohinder. And I think there was one reason I liked Mohinder– Sendhil Ramamurthy. He’s just so nice to look at. And he fakes a Indian/British accent very, very well. It’s actually really disappointing that it’s not real.

Anyway, I have this small (read: large) affinity for spy shows and have thus been watching USA’s new show Covert Affairs. Imagine my surprise and glee when Mr. Ramamurthy showed up in a scene, wearing a suit no less! I love when multiple things I like come together.

Crush of the Day: The Eat, Pray, Love Trailer

July 18, 2010

I am not a Julia Roberts fan. I don’t dislike her by any means, and I’m not going to knock her acting chops, but I don’t have a particular affinity for her either.  So when I heard that she was going to star in the adaptation of Elizabeth Gilbert’s best-seller Eat, Pray, Love–which I have paid next to no attention to, in fact I thought it was a self-help book–it didn’t put me into a tizzy of excitement like I’m sure it did to some other women.

However.

After seeing the trailer for the film, I desperately want to 1) read the book and 2) see the film. My attraction to it may be in part to the liberal use of the Florence & The Machine song in the trailer and the brief appearance of an Asian elephant, but nevertheless, I’m really excited for the movie. And I think it’s because the trailer is so damn good. Check it out below.

I Need This.

And yes. Need is the correct verb in this situation.
